From day one, I tell my students, "I know you're smart, I know you've got tons of knowledge inside; now let's teach you how to get it out."
Sadly, doctors, therapists, and teachers - the experts we've relied on - have been missing the crucial piece that non-speakers have known all along... their issue is a motor disability, NOT an intellectual one.
I'm Beth Frede, the first Certified Spelling to Communicate Practitioner in New Hampshire, and I've seen the life-changing impact of S2C for my students (nonspeakers, minimal speakers, and unreliable speakers with autism and other sensory motor differences) and their families, as well as for my own family (proud aunt of an "open" speller here!).
From basic information ("I have a headache") to unexpected revelations ("I know fluent Spanish") to dreams and goals ("I want to study Economics")*** communication changes everything.
The best day to start is today. I'd love to guide you through this process!
***Real quotes from real spellers
Therapies. Treatments. You've tried them all, but nothing gave your child a way to fully communicate. Still, you just know there's something more for your child. You've been hearing about S2C and wonder, "Could it possibly
work for us?"
Nonspeakers have a form of apraxia, making on-demand motor control
- like speech - difficult.
Open spellers say their issue is motor control,
not cognition.
S2C teaches the motor control to communicate through spelling.
Communication means your child can tell you when they're hurt, worried or anxious. Imagine being able to effectively help them feel less stressed and more in control.
Who is your child? What do they like, think, and feel? What have they always wanted to tell you?
With S2C, you can finally ask them. Relationships become a two-way street like never before.
With open communication, your child can go far beyond getting their basic needs met. Friendships, choices, a sense of control over their day-to-day offers a quality of life that simply can't exist without it.
Nonspeakers with reliable communication can advocate for themselves. You no longer have to be present with your child every moment to know that they're okay. Communication makes them safer.
Communication doesn't take autism away, but it takes away so much stress and guesswork. There is nothing more human than the desire to be known, seen, and understood. Communication is a
basic human right.
"I found out about Spelling to Communicate (S2C) while at a Conference where they showed a draft version of the now famous documentary 'Spellers'. I had always believed my daughter had so much more to say than she was able to express. Traditional communi-cation methods weren’t bridging the gap, and I hoped S2C could finally offer her a way to be heard. At the beginning, I was excited but also cautious—would this really work and would she feel seen and respected in the process?
Since starting S2C sessions, we’ve all noticed a profound change. Grace is more confident, more engaged, and clearly relieved to have a method that honors her intelligence and voice. It’s been amazing to watch her express thoughts, ideas, and humor I’d always known was there but Grace did not have a clear outlet to express herself.
Beth’s approach has been incredibly supportive, respectful, and attuned to our whole family. Beth meets Grace where she is, without pressure or assumptions, and she always celebrate progress, no matter how small. Beth truly believes in her potential, and that belief is powerful.
What I really appreciate is how Beth goes above and beyond to individualize every session—not just in content, but in pacing, tone, and responsiveness. Beth notices when something’s off, adjusts without judgment, and always prioritize Grace’s comfort and autonomy. That sensitivity makes a world of difference.
To another family considering S2C: don’t wait! This process opened a door we didn’t know how to unlock before. Finding a practitioner who listens, adapts, and truly partners with you is rare—and it can be life-changing. Beth is that Practitioner."

"It’s hard to put into words the impact Beth Frede has had on our family, especially our son, Craig. She is not only his Spelling to Communicate (S2C) practitioner, she is truly an extension of our family.
Our journey into S2C began somewhat serendipitously, after a friend recommended we read Underestimated. That book led us down a path that would ultimately change Craig’s life. We were introduced to Beth through another parent, and from our very first interaction, we knew we had found someone special.
Beth’s work with Craig has brought him joy, confidence, and—perhaps most importantly—a voice. Being heard has transformed his demeanor and outlook and given him a renewed sense of purpose and connection. He looks forward to their sessions with enthusiasm and a genuine desire to grow. That is a direct reflection of the trust and respect Beth fosters in every interaction.
Beyond her work with Craig, Beth has taken on a leadership role within the broader S2C community, organizing monthly Zoom gatherings for her parents. She encourages all of us to be better communicators, more attentive listeners, and stronger advocates, not just for our children, but for each other.
It is impossible to recommend Beth Frede with more enthusiasm than we do. Her dedication, compassion, and skill will change your family's life, just as she has changed ours.
With deep gratitude,
The Rogers Family"
"My son had no way to let us know what his thoughts are… We always said if we can only get in to his mind for five minutes to see what he was thinking… We’ve been doing S2C for 16 months, and S2C has been an amazing journey.
We look forward to growing and learning more in the years to come. My son is semi-open working on becoming fully open, which basically means you can communicate with him about anything on a daily basis.
The saddest part is over the year’s people looked at him as a low IQ individual and come to find out he has a brilliant mind. I have witnessed a very kind and compassionate and caring person in what he spells out. His mind, his spirit, his body have calmed down tremendously using S2C .
Beth is an amazing teacher that is compassionate and driven to have these special people in our lives share with the world their thoughts and voice.
S2C is a miracle before our eyes!" - Mark Cyr
"Beth and the S2C program have allowed me to 'hear' my son again. It was devastating when my son lost his ability to speak in sentences at 2 1⁄2 when his autism emerged and he switched to 1-3 words communication to get his needs met.
I have always known his intelligence and felt he just couldn’t get the words out to share it with the world. Beth’s easy-going style, her ability to presume competence and help my son trust his abilities has given me the opportunity to 'hear' that intelligence again. My mind is blown away every session on how much he knows despite being in a self contained autism classroom for the past 15 years which was based on function vs academics - being taught no history, geography, English, or science beyond how a plant grows and no math beyond addition and subtraction.
I am speechless at some of the prior knowledge he has and can now show through this program. I can’t wait until he can share all his thoughts and feelings...I know it’s coming!" - Patricia Cook
"Our 18-year-old son has had speech therapy most of his adult life and has struggled to communicate. Over the last two months of hard work, Beth has introduced a new possibility. By assuming competence, she appears to be opening him up to share his hidden areas of knowledge and interest. This is very exciting! We have always known that his 'voice' was trapped inside. Beth Frede is highly skilled using S2C to help our son." - Scott Cook
